The Model
The Model is one of the region's leading creative hubs, although in our opinion, its major expansion in 2010 severely marred the aesthetic appeal of this arts center (oh, the irony) by grafting a stark modernist facade onto the former 19th-century schoolhouse. Still, its impressively diverse program features something for everyone of an artistic bent, including exhibitions by local and international artists, concerts, film screenings, poetry readings, and lectures. However, the best part of it all is the permanent gallery, which houses the Niland Collection. Among the Niland gems are works by Jack Yeats (1871-1957), brother of William and dedicatee of an entire room at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin; Paul Henry (1877-1958), a noted Northern Irish landscape painter; and Estella Solomons (1882-1968), who in addition to being one of the foremost portrait painters of her generation, also played a significant role in the War of Independence.
