Cork City Gaol And Radio Museum
Less than 2km (1 1/4 miles) west of the city center, this restored prison was infamous in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it housed some of the greatest figures in the revolutionary movement. Today its exhibits celebrate the former prisoners, and colorfully explain its history. Among those imprisoned here was Countess Constance Markiewicz (1868-1927), a Sinn Fein MP with an extremely colorful biography. She was the first woman elected to the British parliament (although she refused to take her seat) and was sentenced to death for her part in the Easter Rising; when the sentence was commuted because of her gender, she told the court "I wish you had the decency to shoot me." She later became the first woman in Europe to hold a cabinet position.
