Mizen Head Signal Station

At Mizen Head, the southernmost point in Ireland, the land falls precipitously into the Atlantic breakers in a procession of spectacular 210m (700-ft.) sea cliffs. A suspension bridge permits access to the old signal station, now a visitor center, on a rock promontory, the southernmost point on the Irish mainland, with awe-inspiring views of the cliffs and the open sea. Whales, seals, dolphins, and seabirds contribute to the spectacle. No matter what the weather, it's worth a trip. On wild days, tremendous Atlantic waves assault the cliffs. On a clear day, seals bask on the rocks and gannets wheel over the sea and dive into the tranquil waters. The visitor center also has a program of rather grown-up day courses throughout the year, in subjects such as bird-watching and local geology. As this book was being written, the Signal Station was just about to reopen after a major refurbishment program, which includes an improved visitor center, a lighthouse simulator, and new bridges and viewing platforms. It all sounds pretty spectacular. On the way out to Mizen Head, you'll pass Barleycove Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in southwest Ireland and a great place to explore.
