Natural History Museum

This unusual museum is not just a museum of science and animals, it's also a museum of museums. Inside its cold, stone walls (recently renovated and returned to their former glory) stuffed and mounted creatures are stored inside polished wooden cabinets and on stone and wooden plinths in precisely the manner in which they would have been displayed in the 19th century. Huge whale skeletons are suspended from the ceiling, in a manner that still seems spectacular. It's a unique and sometimes uncomfortable place in which you can gaze at the bones, or into the lifeless glass eyes, of thousands of species. In addition to presenting the zoological history of Ireland, it contains examples of extinct animals from around the world. It's popular with Irish school groups, so children here seem to travel in herds.
