Through an old fortified castle and re-creations of ancient sites such as a crannog (a fortified island) and a ring fort, the Craggaunowen Project offers a timeline of Ireland's past from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. There are reconstructed Bronze Age dwellings (often inhabited by craftspeople demonstrating ancient weaving techniques and the like); working demonstrations of cooking and farming methods; pottery making; and even a herd of rare sheep of a breed native to Ireland since prehistoric times. It's interesting to explore, and certainly makes up in charm for what it lacks in razzmatazz, although it's not as effective as it might be at conveying any real sense of living history. Still, it's worth a visit, especially for history buffs and those curious about what such sites looked like.
