Cliffs Of Moher

These high cliffs plunging down to the Atlantic offer unforgettable views. This is a dramatic place, where the soundtrack is provided by the roar of waves crashing against the cliff walls far below and the faint cries of nesting seabirds. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay as misty shapes off in the distance. Understandably, this is also dead center on the tourist track, with a constant throng of tour buses and cars clogging the parking lot below. In recent years, a large modern visitor center has opened, changing the landscape and adding little to the wonders wrought by nature. Now there are more souvenir shops and a "Cliffs of Moher Experience" including a film -- why this is necessary when the real thing is right outside, we simply do not know. Now a per-person price is being introduced for parking and access to the visitor center, and the fees situation has become a bit outrageous. Tip: If you visit the cliffs after the visitor center closes, it's much more peaceful. And free. The Cliffs of More ... Money -- After the construction of a glossy €30-million visitor center a few years ago, prices at the Cliffs of Moher were bound to increase. And so they have. First it was parking charges, which increased over the course of a few years from €2.50 to €4.50, then to €6, and finally €8. In 2011, the cliffs introduced a new "family friendly" per-person charge of €6 to replace the parking charges. The new charge includes parking and admission to the controversial visitor center and cliff "Experience." Children under 16 years old get in for free. So now, a couple -- who just want to park and see the cliffs -- rather than paying €8 for the privilege, will pay a "family friendly" €12 instead. As of this writing you could still opt to pay €8 to park your car (which suddenly, given the new charges, seems almost cheap) and not go to the visitor center at all, but you have to ask for that option, and it is not advertised on-site. The group who run the cliff says it intends to eliminate the option in the near future, and move over fully to the per-person charge. It's all become a little absurd, frankly. We are talking about a natural wonder here, created by winds and waves, and this seems dangerously close to naked profiteering. For what it's worth, access to the cliffs themselves is actually free. Under Irish law, you cannot be charged for visiting the cliffs on foot. Because of this, some visitors have begun rejecting the parking charge and finding places to park nearby, then hiking up to the cliffs for a quick peek before racing back to their cars. But before you try this, bear in mind that the local government has banned all parking on the side of the road near the cliffs, and this law is zealously enforced. We've heard of several visitors coming back to their cars to find €50 parking tickets.
