This interesting center (pronounced Graw-nya-wayl) in an old, converted church, is dedicated to the life and story of one of Ireland's great female heroes, Grace O'Malley (1530-1600). Known by the ferocious sobriquet "the Pirate Queen," she led battles against the English and ruled the seas in these parts. Parts of the center also address the Great Famine that killed an estimated 100,000 people in County Mayo.
